Tech Savvy STEM Workshop Sessions – Morning

First year girls: Choose Two STEM Morning Workshops and College Savvy

College Savvy – Required for First Year Attendees
(If you are attending with a parent, sign up for the same time slot they do.)
Investigate colleges and university programs that mesh with your STEM career goals. Complete a mock college application and interview with a College Recruiter. You will also go on a Scavenger Hunt to learn more about what each school has to offer.

Returning Girls: Choose Three STEM Morning Workshops

Crime Scene Investigation
Your classroom has been trashed and your classroom pet is missing. Blood and muddy shoe prints are scattered on the floor. It’s up to you to solve the mystery. Use forensic science tools to solve the crime and identify the suspect.

Genes in a Bottle
Come capture your genetic essence in a bottle! In this session, you will extract genomic deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) from your cheek cells and watch it precipitate from solution as floating white strands. Your very own DNA will be collected and transferred to a helix-shaped necklace that you can take home.

Making Compound Medications
Learn how to make our very own compounded ‘medication’ while exploring the inside secrets of the pharmacy world. We will discover how to assist our neighbors and how to influence healthcare.

Learn Computer Coding Using Adafruit
Would you like to learn electronics, with an all-in-one board that has sensors and LEDs built in? Circuit Playground is here – and it’s the best way to practice programming on real hardware with no soldering or sewing required!

Hydraulic Machinery – Experience the Power of Fluids!
Using models of real construction machines, see how a little bit of fluid (water in our case) does a lot of work to help you reach far places!

Exploration into Robotics
Work together to build a robot using VEXIQ robot kits and WonderWorkshop (WW) Robots.

Zombie Hunting
Use critical thinking and problem solving skills to reduce the number of Zombie attacks in our city!

Which Way Did They Go? Fun with Electrophoresis!
Participants will explore the concepts of molecular size and charge. Students then apply these
concepts to gel electrophoresis of differently charged dyes, performing techniques such as
micropipetting and gel loading & analysis.

Design, Model, and Test a Bridge!
Are you creative and want to design important structures? This class involves designing, modeling, and testing a bridge to see whose creation will hold the most weight! This is a fun, engaging, and educational class that will allow you to explore multiple Engineering Careers.

Into the Woods
Step Into the Woods by exploring our forests. Get some hands-on experience by learning how to measure a tree for age with forester tools and see how climate and invasive species affect trees. Through this program, you’ll walk away knowing how to better understand and protect our local forests.

It IS Rocket Science!
Rocket science is the designing and building of rockets, and it is often thought of as something challenging. So much so that ‘Rocket Science’ has become a catchall term for something difficult to learn and understand. But everybody is already a bit of a rocket scientist. Have you ever blown up a balloon, then let it go without tying it off? If so, then you have made a rocket! In this class we will learn a little about how rockets work, build our own rockets with balloons that actually go where you want.

Girl Savvy Skills Workshop Sessions – Afternoon

Workshop Start & end times:
Workshop 1 12:40-1:10 pm
Workshop 2 1:15-1:45 pm
Workshop 3 1:50-2:25 pm

First year girls: Must choose It All Adds Up! and Are You Ready for a Stem Career? and a third session of your choice

Returning girls: Must choose How Do I Get Ready? and two sessions of your choice

It All Adds Up! For students who are NEW to Tech Savvy (available all 3 sessions)
Learn how to budget based on income. As a student, thinking about how money is earned and where it is spent may not always be a priority. Once a job is secured and work in a profession begins, we need to know how to plan for an income and how to reasonably spend the money earned. During this session, you will find out how “It All Adds Up!”

Are You Ready for a STEM Career? For students who are NEW to Tech Savvy
Sessions 12:40-1:10 and 1:15-1:45 only

How Do I Get Ready? – Preparing for College and Picking the Right One – For students who have been to Tech Savvy before – 1:50-2:25 session only

Choosing a Mentor (available all 3 sessions)
Knowing your personality will help you choose someone who has taken a similar path to you. In this session we will identify your personality and set goals for getting a mentor.

Seeing Yourself in the Future (available all 3 sessions)
This is a panel discussion with women working in STEM careers.

Shift the Language to Shift Perspective (available all 3 sessions)
Appleton North’s Gender Equality Club Tech Savvy presentation will discuss the language surrounding women in STEM and emphasize how infinitely capable girls truly are. We first reflect and educate on both modern-day signs of sexism and our common use of gendered language. Our goal is to empower girls to pursue their passions regardless of precedent, highlighting how women excel in male-dominated fields not ‘despite their gender,’ but because of their phenomenal perseverance and strength. Within our presentation the girls will analyze media, acknowledge deep-ingrained societal biases, and engage in discussion surrounding society’s use of words.

Confidence Code Part 1 – Nuts and Bolts of Confidence (available all 3 sessions)
What is Confidence? Confidence is what turns our thoughts into action. It allows us to do things that seem hard, scary, or impossible. Join us to move toward a more confident and empowered YOU.

Confidence Code Part 2 – Cracking the Code (available all 3 sessions)
You already explored the Nuts and Bolts of Confidence last year and you have the book. This session introduces cracking the code by learning to risk more, think less, and be your amazingly imperfect and totally powerful self.
